Emily walked into the coffee shop, glad to get away from the commotion of the bullpen back at the BAU. Moving up to the counter, she ordered a tall latte minus the foam. Scanning the shop, she spotted an empty table towards the window. With her latte in hand, she quickly made her way to the table, sitting down and taking a deep breath. Looking out the window, she watched as couples walked past. Sighing, she reflected back on her past relationships... What relationships? She thought to herself. It had been a while since she had gone out on an actual date. "Wow," she mused softly. "I really know how to depress myself."

Reid found himself seating at his desk by himself. Morgan had taken his yearly vacation back home to Chicago. Hotch was in his office working away, as well as Rossi and JJ. Garcia was in her office as well, yet Reid knew very well that she wasn't working. Not now. They didn't have a case going in, though it would only be a matter of time before they did, so that meant that the analysts was most likely playing some sort of game on her computer. Emily, the only one who would be in the bull pen with him, had just taken her break. Reid read the next file he had to work on and was ready to started the report when he realized it was around two in the afternoon and he hadn't left his desk since getting there at seven in the morning. Sighing he decided that it was less than healthy to work for that long.
Getting up he went to Hotch's office to tell him that he was taking his "lunch" break then grabbing his bag on the way out of the office. Once on the ground floor and out the door and started to walk. he didn't want to drive anywhere, after all his break was only half an hour long, though he knew Hotch wouldn't care if he took longer, after all if there wasn't a case there was little to no reason to be in the office. It wasn't that hot of a day, luckily, though it was in the low 80s. He knew about a great little coffee shop not far from the FBI HQ. It was just down the road. Luckily since it was so close to the FBI building most the people with in it weren't military, after all they were on a military base, but FBI agents, which made Reid feel a lot better about going there.
As he walked into the place he wasn't even thinking of Emily. What were the chances of her being her, if Reid actually looked into the stat he would have found it quite possible. Instead he walked to the counter ordered a large coffee and a blue berry muffin. Once he had the order he grabbed a few creams and sugars before turning to find a spot to sit. That was when he say Emily. Smiling he walked over to her table and sat down. "Hey." He said simply pouring three sugars and two creams into the coffee, not having heard her comment a few second before.

Emily jumped slightly as Reid's words roused her from her thoughts. "Hey." She said, watching the young doctor fix his coffee. "Easy on the sugar there Reid." She said, shaking her head. Wondering how long exactly he had been there, she hoped he hadn't over heard her talking to herself. That could prove to be embarrassing. "Had to get away from the office too?" She inquired, hooking some loose hair behind her ear.
Smiling up at him, she took a sip from her coffee, glad to have the company. At least she could distract herself from her depressing musings. "So, no new case yet huh?"

Reid looked at Emily as she spoke. He was glade to find that she did in fact want him there. He wasn't sure if he could have dealt with being told she didn't want company. It was kind of odd, but Reid really didn't know much about Prentiss. She was the newest member of the team, though she had been there a good two years now. Yet he barely knew her, other than the stuff that he had read in her file, like her birth date and time. But other than that she never talked about her life out side of the office. In fact no one did. If it hadn't been for the Fisher King no one would have known about his mother. It was a surprise to Reid that his past seemed to be the one that most everyone knew about, yet he wanted to keep it secret the most. Maybe that was a lie, but he sure didn't like going on and talking about his broken childhood when he already felt like he was the outsider of the office.
"Yeah, I thought it might be a good idea to grab something to eat." he answered taking a long drink of the sugary, caffeine full, coffee. It wasn't late but having gone into the office early he knew he would need the extra energy later, especially if they did get called in for a case. "Nothing yet." he told her, though he knew she knew that, why would he be there eating and drinking if they had to be somewhere else saving lives. But he didn't mention that. he knew Emily was just trying to make small talk. It was odd that their idea of small talk was about catching killers, though. "I'm sure JJ will find something for us to do, soon, though." he added, almost like they couldn't have a life other than catching serial killers. In a way it was true. That's why none of them had much of a personally life... well with Reid is was more his being awkward toward women... more like everyone, that caused him not going out on a date.

"I know, JJ's good at her job." Emily smiled back at Reid. It was amazing that outside of work, they couldn't find anything else to talk about except work. Chuckling softly, she shook her head. "Why is it that we can't stop talking about serial killers and psychos when we're not at work?" She chuckled again.
"So, how is life with the young Doctor Reid?" She asked, wondering what exactly Reid did outside of work. Between the two of them, they both were like outsiders. Of course Emily had been with the team for a while now, but she still felt like she was outside of it sometimes. As for Reid, well, he was a child protoge, it had to be awkward somethings for him around everyone else.

Reid couldn't help but laugh a little. In a way they all thought a like, even if they didn't know much personal stuff about each other. They were together nearly 24/7, what else did they had to talk about other than serial killers and work. Maybe if they got out more and went to a bar or something, though Reid never drank. Reid didn't quite like the thought of that. The last time they had taken a large team outing the next case they were called into was Tobias Hankel's and everyone knew what happened then. It wasn't like them going out together had anything to do with Reid being Abducted, but some how he made a connection between the two.
When Emily asked how his life was going he wasn't sure what to say. It wasn't like he was trying to hid anything from her but he also knew that anything he did have to say she most likely wouldn't be interested in hearing. She had asked, though, so he might as well answer. "Well the other night just after the Dawson case I was reading this article about the Subdermal heat signature of the polar ice caps." he said then took a bite of his muffin. Laughing slightly he continued a little faster, not realizing that Emily probably had no idea what he was talking about. "They actually found a pattern between the molecular forms and the thermo hydrates! Can you believe that?!" Reid smiled a large grin as he looked at Emily as if she really understood what he had just said. ((ooc:By-the-way, all the smart stuff Reid just said means nothing... I kind of just made it up using different things that I knew and what not. So don't try and make heads or tails of it.))[/size]

Emily listened to Reid as he spoke about something that was way over her head. "Right." She said, smiling and nodding. Looking down at her coffee, she tried to make sense of what he said, but it was too far over her head. "I'm sure that's very interesting, the molecular makeup of polar ice caps." She chuckled.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh about that." She apologized, hoping that he wouldn't take offense to her laughing. "I guess I'm just not up on my genius reading." Emily hooked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I guess we're just a little too different. Not really my idea of pleasure reading." She sighed.

Reid looked embarrassed when Emily admitted that she had no idea what he was talking about. "Sorry." He muttered taking another drink of his coffee to try and shield himself from the embarrassment. It was a normal assurance, really. Reid going on about something no one in the room understood. He just forgot that they didn't read and know all the stuff that he did. It wasn't their fault or even his. But it did hurt when Reid said things figuring that because everyone was like his family they would understand. Yet as of yet he hadn't found anyone that could keep up with his psycho babble. Other than that that involved psychology or criminology or something like that.
Deciding that his life was to genius like for Emily to understand he decided that they should talk about what she had been up to. When she made a joke about not being up on her genius reading Reid actually smiled. Even if they didn't understand him they all sure knew how to make him feel better. "So... Um.. what have you been up to?" It was kind of a weird question for the boy-wonder to ask. He didn't want to pry or anything, but he didn't want to talk about any of their last cases either. If this question feel through then he had another thing that they could talk about. A book that was famous so she had to have read it and something that did with their job, "Crime and Punishment".

Biting her lower lip, Emily felt bad suddenly. It was hard enough for the young doctor to fit in. "It's alright Reid." She said, giving him a reassuring smile. "I think it's great and cool that you read that sort of stuff." She added. "You never know when we might need that kind of information on a case."
She paused for a moment though when he inquired about what she had been up to lately. "Well, aside from the various cases, I've managed to have dinner with my mother again... Other than that it's mostly been work work work, which really isn't out of the ordinary for us." She sighed. "I managed to start a book, but it's sitting by my bed waiting for me to pick it up again."

Reid knew that Emily was doing the best that she could. He couldn't be so selfish to make her feel bad because she didn't read the same random articles that he did. In fact no one should really read the articles that he did unless they worked in that field. But the genius read through things so fast that it was hard to not run out of things to read. That was why he went off and read random things about polar ice caps, and molecules. Even the fact that he was studying for his BA in philosophy didn't keep him busy. That just gave him a tone of things to think about, added with his ever full work load of serial killers in made his life and thoughts very interesting. Not that he was starting to doubt the meaning of life or anything, actually quite the opposite.
Bringing himself back to the conversation at hand Reid thought about what Emily was saying. Lunch with her mom. That could bring up so interesting things, yet Reid knew that her relationship with Elizabeth Prentiss was less than friendly so he figured it would be best to stay away from that topic. Instead he asked, "Yeah, what book?" There was 99% chance that the young man had read it, that was unless it was a romance book or anything like that. which suddenly Reid had the feeling that it was. Something about Emily shouted out Romance novel. Reid shuttered at the thought of it.

Emily looked down at her coffee, somewhat embarrassed by what novel she had been reading. "I found a pretty good Canadian author during a trip to the book store recently." She said, her free time to browse book titles were few and far between. "I have to admit, the genre is a little far fetched, yet I couldn't put the book down." She looked up at Reid, a smile on her face.
"It's part of a series called the Women of the Otherworld. The author is Kelley Armstrong. Basically it follows these women who aren't actually human. From what I've read about it there's a female werewolf, a witch, vampire.. Quite interesting...For fiction."
((OOC: I hope the book I chose fits Emily, I was just going on books I've read))

((ooc: The book fights great. I remember in one episode, I believe it was Jones, or the one before it, that Emily and Morgan had this whole talk about how they both like scifi books, so it works fine.))
Reid ate another large chunk of his "lunch" as Emily spoke. He could tell that she was trying avoid telling him what the book was. He wasn't sure if that was a bad thing or not. Maybe he had chosen the bad subject after all. It always amazed him how he could do that. Maybe that was why he couldn't get a girl. Actually he was quite aware that he couldn't get a girl because he never asked anyone out. And he never asked anyone out because he thought he would never get a date. All in all it really didn't matter if he got a date or not, he always seemed awkward around girls, well actually everyone, so he was sure he would ruin it one way or another.
The book Emily described to him took him by surprise for a moment. He hadn't expected her to be into anything science fiction. But then he didn't know her very well. Maybe he was just going off a stereo-type when he thought she would be into Romance novels. Now that he really thought about it she wasn't that kind of person. The who vampire and werewolf thing was still a little new to him. Actually that kind of made it not really scifi, more like Gothic, though that kind of novel had a falling out in the 18th century. In fact Reid didn't know what kind of novel it sounded like. What he did know was that he had never heard of it, or the author, that was mostly because it was Canadian. Reid wasn't going to let the conversation drop off just because of that.
"Oh, really?" Reid said trying to mask any kind of... well he really didn't know what he was trying to mask. It wasn't like he was disappointed in Emily for her choose of book, after all he was one t read some of the more out there novels. But he knew that if he said something just right then he could probably make her feel bad, and that was something he really didn't want to do. "what's the plot?" He asked after taking a drink of his coffee. With out thinking he looked at his watch to see how much time had passed, luckily it had only been about ten minutes of his thirty minute break. Not that Hotch would mind at the moment. "I mean How do this three know each other... and what's the problem." The question sounded like something a teacher would ask on a test over some book. Emily felt partially relieved that Reid wouldn't judge her on her reading preferences. When he inquired about the plot and such, she sighed. "Well, it's a series, so each book is different." She smiled, looking down at her coffee. "The first book is about the only female werewolf. She was bitten by her boyfriend of the time, but now she wants to have her own life outside the pack."
She hoped Reid wouldn't be bored. She knew it wasn't up to his level of reading, but she enjoyed it. "The female werewolf doesn't meet the witch until the second book I believe. Technically you could read the books out of order and not be lost, but I prefer reading them in order."

Reid wasn't so much as bored by the conversation as he felt odd. It wasn't the kind of book he read and thinking about Werewolves and vampires was odd. After all neither could be real. Not that Reid had a problem was non-fiction books. The stuff he read and watched could happen, though, there was always some sort of science behind it. But this was pure made up. Not that it mattered. It was just a novel after all. And wasn't the point of reading to get away from things and be and see things that you normally wouldn't?
Smiling Reid didn't know what to say. It was interesting but he had never read anything like it before, so what could he say. Anything he could think of would just sound patronizing, like he was to good to read it. Yet he knew he had to say something. Being quiet for to long would only make her think and wonder what he was thinking, and she would most likely come up with something bad. So he said the only thing that he could really think of that wouldn't sound bad. "You'll have to leaned it to me some time." Sure it wasn't anything like he normally read, but with his mind he could get through it in a matter of hours, maybe even minutes, then it would be over with. And it would give him something to talk to her about. Smiling he took a drink of his coffee.
